The Peter Ross wet fly is a classic traditional design with Scottish roots, long appreciated by anglers who favour patterns that combine movement with just enough brightness to stand out. Rather than imitating one specific insect, it gives a general impression of emerging life or small baitfish, which is often why it continues to work across a wide range of conditions.
Its clean profile and lively materials make it a reliable choice in coloured water, deeper runs, or on dull days when fish respond well to a touch of flash. Fished singly or as part of a traditional team of wets, the Peter Ross is a dependable searching fly; ideal when you’re covering water and looking to draw a positive reaction rather than match an exact hatch.
Please note all of our fishing flies are barbless unless otherwise stated.

Present the fly slightly downstream and across the current, then allow the flow to draw the line straight. As the fly sweeps through the water and begins to lift toward the end of the swing, the brighter body can catch attention and prompt solid takes.
In steadier glides or slower runs, cast upstream and maintain a clean, natural drift. Keep interference to a minimum and allow the fly to travel at the same pace as the current so the materials move freely.
When used on the upper dropper of a team, a gradual lift or steady figure-of-eight retrieve can bring the fly up through the water column. This rising movement often suggests a fleeing fry or emerging insect and can trigger reaction takes from curious trout.
