The Blob Black lure is a highly visible stillwater pattern designed to provoke reaction takes rather than imitate natural food. This black version offers a more subtle, silhouette based alternative that works exceptionally well when trout are feeding confidently but ignoring conventional flies.
The dark profile stands out clearly against lighter water and sky, making it especially effective in low light, overcast conditions or at depth. Fished on its own or as part of a washing line setup, the Black Blob often acts as an attractor that pulls fish toward the cast, even if they ultimately take a different fly. It’s a reliable choice when you need to wake fish up and get them moving. Some fisheries have banned the Blob Black because it is so effective!
Target Species - Trout
Tail - Marabou Black & Crystals Pearl
Body - Blobs Black
Head - Black
Hook - Barbless, Mustad of Norway
Fish the Black Blob on the point with lighter nymphs or buzzers suspended above. The Blob’s visibility helps draw trout into the area, while the droppers pick up fish that follow but don’t commit to the attractor.
A steady figure of eight or very slow pull keeps the fly moving without killing its profile. This works well when trout are cruising just below the surface or holding mid-water.
When fish are holding deeper, allow the fly to sink before starting a slow retrieve. The solid black outline remains easy for trout to spot, making it an effective searching pattern when covering open water.
