The Zulu Pearly wet fly is a livelier take on the long-standing Zulu imitation, a pattern that has earned its place in fly boxes thanks to its straightforward design and consistent results. Rather than copying one exact insect, it gives the impression of small dark prey, drowned terrestrials, or even tiny fry; which is often all that’s needed to bring fish onto the take.

The added pearly flash gives this version a little extra visibility without losing the traditional character of the original. It’s a useful choice when the water carries a touch of colour, light levels are low, or trout are prepared to chase something with a bit more presence. Fished singly or as part of a team, it’s a dependable searching fly that works well when you need to cover water and find active fish.

Please note all of our fishing flies are barbless unless otherwise stated.

How To Fish the Zulu Pearly Wet Fly

Traditional Across & Down Presentation

Aim your cast slightly downstream and across the flow, then allow the line to come under gentle tension. As the fly travels across the current it will rise naturally, with the pearly body giving off a faint glimmer that can prompt decisive takes.

Natural Upstream Drift

When fishing smoother water, present the fly upstream and let it move at the pace of the current. Avoid overworking it, a clean, drag-free drift allows the materials to pulse subtly and keeps the presentation looking natural.

Fishing the Top Dropper

This pattern sits well on the upper dropper of a team of wets. Lift gradually into the hang or use a slow, steady retrieve to bring the flies just under the surface, where they can imitate a struggling insect and tempt following fish.
