The Black Pennell wet fly is a long established traditional wet fly, originally designed by H. Cholmondeley-Pennell, and it remains a firm favourite with anglers who appreciate simple, proven patterns. Tied with a dark, purposeful profile, it suggests a range of small insects and drifting food items without trying to imitate anything too precisely, which is often why it works so consistently.
The Black Pennell wet fly is a particularly useful choice in early-season conditions, higher water, or overcast days when fish respond well to a slightly bolder silhouette. Fished as part of a traditional spider or wet fly team, the Black Pennell carries just enough presence to stand out while still looking natural in the current. Whether you’re covering glides for grayling or searching broken runs for trout, it’s a dependable fly to have tied on when you need to find fish rather than wait for them.
Please note all of our fishing flies are barbless unless otherwise stated.

Cast slightly across and downstream and allow the flow to bring the line under steady tension. As the fly swings through the current it lifts naturally, often drawing confident takes from fish sitting just off the main flow.
On steadier water or chalk streams, fish it upstream and allow it to travel naturally with minimal drag. This presentation works well when trout or grayling are holding deeper and feeding quietly below the surface.
A strong option on the top dropper of a multi-fly cast. Lift into the hang or use a slow retrieve to let the fly rise toward the surface film, imitating a struggling insect and triggering reaction takes.
