The Black Hopper Wet Fly is a traditional subsurface pattern designed to imitate a variety of dark aquatic insects. With its slim body, soft hackle and understated profile, it represents emerging nymphs, drowned terrestrials and small wet flies that trout and grayling regularly encounter in rivers and stillwaters.

The black colouring creates a strong silhouette beneath the surface, making it particularly effective in clear flows, overcast conditions or slightly coloured water. Its soft hackle fibres move naturally in the current, producing subtle lifelike motion even during a slow drift. This makes the pattern a reliable choice when fish are feeding just below the surface or mid-water.

Versatile and easy to present, the Black Hopper Wet Fly works well throughout the season and is especially productive during periods of insect activity when trout are intercepting ascending or drifting prey.

Please note all of our fishing flies are barbless unless otherwise stated.

Multi-Purpose Pattern

How To Fish the Black Hopper Wet Fly

Traditional Upstream Drift

Cast upstream and allow the fly to drift naturally just below the surface. Keep light contact to detect subtle takes.

Downstream Swing

Present the fly across and slightly downstream, allowing it to swing under tension. Takes often occur as the fly lifts at the end of the drift.

Team of Flies Setup

Fish it as part of a multi-fly cast with other wets or nymphs. It can be positioned on the dropper to cover mid-water feeding zones effectively.

A dependable and adaptable wet fly, the Black Hopper remains a valuable pattern for anglers targeting trout and grayling in a wide range of fishing situations.
