The Klinkhammer Dry Fly Black is a highly effective emerger style pattern designed to sit with the abdomen below the surface film and the hackle/post visible above it. This natural positioning closely imitates an insect in the act of emerging, making it particularly effective when trout and grayling are feeding just under the surface rather than taking fully formed adults.

The original Klinkhammer Special was developed in 1984 by Dutch angler Hans van Klinken. His concept was to create a fly that accurately represented insects trapped in surface tension during emergence. The black variation offers a strong silhouette and clear outline, especially in overcast weather, shaded water or late evening conditions.

The dark body enhances visibility from below, creating a bold profile that fish can easily identify. As a result, the Klinkhammer Dry Fly remains a reliable and versatile emerger pattern, suitable for both rivers and stillwaters whenever fish are keyed in on hatching insects.

Please note all of our fishing flies are barbless unless otherwise stated.

Why Choose The Klinkhammer  Dry Fly Black

Emerger Profile

Designed to imitate insects caught in the surface film during hatch.

High Visibility Post

Makes it easier to follow the fly in broken water or glare.

Strong Silhouette

The dark body creates a clear outline in low light or coloured water.

How To Dress The Klinkhammer Fly

Apply Floatant To Post & Hackle

Lightly treat the post and hackle before fishing to maintain buoyancy.

Keep The Abdomen Untreated

Avoid applying floatant to the lower body so it can sit naturally beneath the surface.

Dry Between Casts

Use amadou or desiccant powder if the fly absorbs water during use.

How To Fish The Klinkhammer Dry Fly Black

Upstream Presentation

Cast upstream to rising fish and allow a drag free drift through the feeding lane. The partially submerged abdomen is central to the fly’s effectiveness.

Target Feeding Lanes

Focus on glides, pool tails and current seams where trout and grayling intercept emerging insects.

Low Light & Dull Conditions

The black body performs particularly well in evening sessions or cloudy weather when fish rely on silhouette and contrast.

The Klinkhammer imitation combines innovative emerger design with dependable performance, making it a valuable addition to any trout or grayling fly selection.
