The Diawl Bach Hot Head Nymph is a high-visibility adaptation of the traditional Welsh stillwater pattern, designed to add an extra trigger point to a proven silhouette. While retaining the slim, natural profile associated with classic Diawl Bach designs, this variation incorporates a brightly coloured head to increase contrast and improve strike attraction.

The streamlined body continues to imitate midge pupae and small aquatic larvae, making it a strong option when trout are feeding on suspended subsurface insects. The addition of the hot head enhances visibility in coloured water, low light conditions or during periods when fish are responding better to subtle hotspots. It is a reliable choice for reservoirs, lakes and smaller stillwaters throughout the fishing season.

Please note all of our fishing flies are barbless unless otherwise stated.

Why Choose The Diawl Bach Hot Head Nymph

Enhanced Visual Trigger: The bright head provides a focal point that can encourage takes when fish ignore more understated flies.

Maintains Classic Profile: Despite the added hotspot, the pattern keeps the slim Diawl Bach shape that trout readily recognise as natural food.

Effective in Challenging Conditions: Particularly useful in stained water, deeper presentations or overcast weather where added visibility helps.

Diawl Bach Hot Head Nymph Fishing Techniques

For consistent results with the Diawl Bach Hot Head Nymph, try the following methods:

Controlled Descent and Slow Figure of Eight: Allow the fly to sink to the feeding level before retrieving with a steady, slow figure of 8 motion. Hold the fly briefly at the end of the retrieve, as trout often take during the pause.

Team of Flies Setup: Fish it as part of a multi-fly cast. It performs well on the dropper as an attractor pattern or on the point to maintain depth and draw attention to the cast.

Adjust to Trout Activity: In calm conditions, maintain a subtle retrieve to keep the presentation natural. If trout are feeding aggressively, increase retrieve speed slightly or add short pulls to imitate an ascending or disturbed pupa.
